Embracing Nature's Complexity: How Forests Control Climate
Innovative ideas such as the "biotic pump" have a way to impose themselves
Anastassia Makarieva summarizes the results of the conference “Embracing Nature’s Complexity” in Munich, held in April 2024. The idea is that forests can counterbalance global warming by their biophysical effect on the water cycle of evaporation and condensation in the atmosphere. These effects are part of the concept of “biotic regulation” and include the innovative and fascinating idea of the “biotic pump,” proposing that forests control their own supply of water by pumping it in the form of water vapor from the oceans. Many people still call this idea “controversial,” but it is imposing itself by the mere force of truth, and it may provide us a window of respite to stabilize climate while we move toward a cleaner and more stable world. We can do that if we respect forests, and we let them grow and do their job of stabilizing Earth’s ecosystem.
Here is a copy of the message I sent to the “Holobionts” discussion group. If you are interested and you would like to join it, let me know in the comments (or write me directly at ugo.bardi(thingette)@unifi.it
The conference on "Embracing Nature's Complexity" in Munich is over. It was a remarkable experience where researchers, communicators, artists, and financial operators collected to discuss how to stabilize Earth's climate by preserving Earth's ecosystem. About 70 participants were from the Americas, China, and Europe; unfortunately, some invitees from Africa were denied visas and couldn't attend. The conference was organized by Anastassia Makarieva, Andrei Nefiodov, Antonio and Paulo Nobre, Ian Pokorny, Susan Masino and several others. I can tell you that all the participants were holobionts!
So much was said in this conference that my mind is still suffering from general wreckage. In time, we'll see to publish reports and videoclips. For the time being, you can take a look at some pictures I took at the "Holobiont" page on Facebook:

And, as always, onward, fellow holobionts!
